Vector algebra and its application Analysis: Functions - Odd, Even, and Periodic functions, Hyperbola functions and their graphs; Co-ordinate Geometry: Conic sections in rectangular co-ordinates - parabola, ellipse, and hyperbola; Parametric equations: Plane polar co-ordinates, polar curves; Differentiation: Rolle's theorem and the mean-value theorems;Taylor's theorem; Repeated differentiation; Applications for differentiation, Indeterminate form;.
ME 159 Technical Drawing
Geometrical constructions; Orthographic projections and other projections; descriptive geometry, intersections and development.
ME 161 Basic Mechanics
Introductory concepts of engineering mechanics involving basic principles in statics and dynamics with simple applications; simple machines and conservation laws.
GE 171 Applied Optics
Review of essential optics - application in surveying and photogrammetric equipment; physics of the human eye and the photographic camera; binocular vision and depth perception; physical optics - wave motion, diffraction, polarisation, spectroscopy, the electromagnetic spectrum; principles of electromagnetic distance measurement.

GE 151 Cartography I
History of Cartography; map scales and contents; symbolisation; introduction to map production; thematic and topographic mapping; generalisation; map layout; relief representation; map projections; Introduction to Survey Drawings - Basic Concepts and types; Basic Drafting - Construction of Grid lines; Lettering; Plotting – Details (offset and polar methods), longitudinal and cross sections; Contouring; preparation of site (cadastral) plans; Inking. Use of Microstation software.
GE 161 Basic Survey Principles
Measurement systems and equipment- Handling, adjustment, and regular maintenance of Survey equipments. Theodolites and level instruments- principles of measurements; compass traverse; flat taping; step chaining, detailing. Abney level; graphical adjustment of compass traverses; tertiary levelling; contouring; angular measurements; chain surveying and detailing. Introduction to theodolite traversing and levelling; plane-tabling method; detailing by chain surveying; preparation of medium scale maps.
SEMESTER TWO
MATH 152 Mathematics II
Algebra: Matrix algebra - Determinants and their properties, applications to systems of linear equations, homogeneous systems, eigen values and eigen vectors; Analysis: Series - Convergence of series of real numbers, tests of convergence, series of functions and power series, convergence of power series; Integration: the definite integral; Definition: The Riemann Sum; techniques of integration including advanced methods of substitution, partial fractions, by parts and reduction formulae, applications; Improper integrals: convergence; partial differentiation, total derivations.
GE 158 Introduction To Information Technology
The objective of this subject is to provide students with a clear understanding of a range of: computer hardware, operating systems and networks and software applicable to later coursework and professional activities.
Topics to be covered include:
Introduction to basic computer hardware components and configurations; Computer software -Operating Systems (DOS, WINDOW, MAC, LINUX) an introduction to the Windows and UNIX operating systems; Presentation managers and Viewers, Window systems and graphical user interfaces; word processors, spreadsheets, computer networks and Internet applications, electronic mailing systems. World Wide Web authoring and web page design; multimedia and virtual reality.
EE 152 Basic Electronics
Nature of atom; the vacuum valves - diode, triode, tetrode and pentode; Basic concepts of semiconductors charge carriers, effective mass, mobility, conductivity life time and recombination, continuity equations, flow-equations, Hall effects, PN junctions, choke; rectification and filteration. Bipolar transistors, its characteristics, CB, CC, CE configurations; the transistor and switching devices (ac - dc load lines); Small signal amplifiers.
GE 152 Cartography II
Basic drafting and construction; basic scribing; different masking techniques; map production; lithographic printing; printing machines; text and pattern application; instruments and materials for map construction; cartographic flow diagrams; edge and detail matching; data compatibility; map generalisation and generalisation principles, text and symbol placements on maps. Introduction to digital cartography, and application of survey drafting software- AutoCAD, ArcView.
GE 162 Large Scale Surveying
Distance measurements – direct and indirect distance measurements-taping, optical (tacheometric, substance bar), EDM; angular measurements; traverse computations (reduction of forward bearings, L-D computation and check computations, computation of coordinates), and adjustments; area computations and subdivision of plots; spirit and trigonometrical levelling; introduction to triangulation, trilateration, resection, intersection and radiation as methods for provision of controls.
GE 172 Practical Task I
Preparation of large-scale map of an area.
